Mulberry Got Cara Delevingne a Handbag Cake for her Birthday

Mulberry Cara Delevingne Handbag Cake

Yesterday was Cara Delevingne’s 22nd birthday, and considering that she’s an international It Girl and supermodel from a well-to-do London family, you’d be excused for not knowing exactly what to get her. Mulberry, the brand that loves Cara the very most, did not seem quite so stumped; it got her an edible Mulberry Cara Delevinge Bag, bathed in black fondant.

In this post-Cake Boss world, everything has the potential to be an object that is also a cake, and handbags, with their generally blocky shapes, are relative child’s play to the stunt bakers of the world. Even so, this cake is a particularly good example of the genre; when it first appeared on Mulberry’s Twitter account, I had to look at it very closely to make sure my eyes weren’t deceiving me.

They weren’t. The cake is, of course, modeled after Mulberry’s yet-to-hit-stores collaboration with Delevingne, which mostly involves adding quilting (and sometimes backpack straps or studs) to Mulberry’s popular Bayswater shape. Mulberry and Delevingne are currently in the middle of a huge publicity tour for the bags, so here’s hoping they show up in stores soon.

If you were going to get a handbag birthday cake, which bag would you choose?

Kerry Washington Carries the Infamous Prada Face Bag

Other Brands

Kerry Washington Prada Face Mural Shoulder Bag

Here’s Kerry Washington, attending a private party in LA with a Prada Face Mural Shoulder Bag, which was one of the most eye-catching pieces from the brand’s Spring 2014 collection. The line has long since sold out, but it was so popular that Prada is doing some more girl clutches and things for the upcoming season, like this close-up version: the Napa Zip Girl Clutch, which is currently available.

Speaking of fabulous clutches, “The Many Bags of Kerry Washington” is particularly clutch-heavy, as Kerry’s red carpet appearances greatly outnumber her casual public appearances. BTW, Kerry’s private party seemed to be a very swanky to-do – Zoe Saldana, Tyra Banks,Chrissy Teigen, Leslie Mann, Jennifer LopezJessica Chastain and Selena Gomez were all spotted leaving it.

Valentino Revisits Rockstud Rouge

Other Brands

Valentino Camo Rockstud Rouge Absolute Lock Bag

When Valentino puts out some kind of specialized version of its wildly popular Rockstud bags, shoppers work themselves into a lather. The seasonal lines, like all-black and crystal-covered camo, sell out without fail, and if you wait too long or waste time praying for a sale, you’re generally out of luck. If that was the case for you when the all-red Valentino Rockstud Rouge bags came out several seasons ago, it looks like your luck has changed.

Valentino is calling this reintroduced line “Rouge Absolute,” and it will indeed contain more than just reissues of the popular all-red bags from seasons past, although the red studs do make a return. The collection includes bags, shoes and leather apparel in a variety of shades of red, which has long been the brand’s signature color.

In addition to the red studs, there’s also red camo and red leopard, plus Rockstud Rouge Absolute Signature, which allows buyers to customize their bags, shoes and even sunglasses with metal initial charms, which are removable and can be replaced with studs. At the moment, those styles appear to be available only through Valentino.

Non-signature Rockstud Rouge Absolute pieces are starting to hit other retailers for fall; check out some of the early arrivals below.

Marc by Marc Jacobs Fall 2014 Handbags 19

If it felt to you as though Marc by Marc Jacobs handbags had become a bit stale over the past few years, you weren’t alone; Marc Jacobs felt the same way. In advance of his company’s much-rumored future IPO, Jacobs brought in Katie Hillier and Luella Bartley to breathe new life into the once-powerful contemporary brand, and we now know more about the duo’s first line of bags for the brand.

Marc by Marc Jacobs Fall 2014 maintains the brand’s signature, youth-skewed aesthetic while streamlining and simplifying some of the details, as is fashionable in accessories at the moment. Shoppers will find less hardware on these bags, as well as only one signature print for fall (or at least for the first part of the season – the handbags below are all August in-store deliveries). The results are strong, on the whole, and I like them more the longer I look at them.

Are you intrigued by MBMJ’s new direction? Check out the bags below and let us know.

Fendi Peekaboo Crocodile Mini Bag

Now that it’s August, practically all the bags available for purchase online are from pre-fall or fall. With stores flush with new products and designers churning out more and more exotic bags every season, we wondered how how the highest of high-end bags compared to last season’s crop.
